Base Power And GVEC Collaborates To Launch Utility-Operated Distributed Battery Program To Boost Grid Reliability - SolarQuarter
Base Power, a rapidly expanding distributed energy company, and GVEC (Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative), a major energy distribution provider in Texas, have announced a new partnership to roll out a utility-managed network of residential battery systems. The initiative will begin with installations in Lennar-built communities, aligning with Base Power’s ongoing collaboration with one of the country’s leading homebuilders.
Under this agreement, GVEC will manage the residential battery fleet using Base Power’s proprietary software platform. The system enables GVEC to actively dispatch stored energy from the batteries to reduce transmission and energy costs for its members. Homeowners participating in the program will benefit from full-home backup capabilities and will be able to monitor system performance and backup activity in real-time through the Base mobile app.
This model represents a utility-led approach to integrating residential battery storage into the wider grid infrastructure. The deployment is designed to help stabilize the Texas power grid while also delivering cost savings and energy resilience to end users. The batteries will also support GVEC’s participation in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT)’s Aggregated Distributed Energy Resource (ADER) pilot program, which opens up new revenue streams and grid benefits through aggregated distributed storage.
Zach Dell, CEO of Base Power, said in a statement, “Today is an exciting milestone for Base as we expand our work with utilities across Texas. Our model enables the rapid deployment of cost-effective distributed storage that is fully dispatchable for our utility partners. GVEC has been at the forefront of embracing technology to strengthen the grid, and we’re excited to partner with them to improve resiliency and reduce costs for their members.”
GVEC General Manager and CEO Darren Schauer, stated, “GVEC is embracing new programs, technologies and partnerships that advance the growth of distributed energy-based solutions across our South-Central Texas service area. We are excited to work with Base Power in offering our Lennar members the opportunity to build new homes equipped to incite long-term affordability and grid resiliency from the start. This is an inventive, modern way to meet the needs of our members and the energy industry.”
The pilot program officially began deployment in June 2025 and marks a significant step in Base Power’s broader efforts to support utilities in adopting distributed energy solutions. By qualifying for ERCOT’s ADER program, GVEC will be able to generate additional value from the battery systems while preserving backup functionality for homeowners.
GVEC, which serves more than 100,000 members across a 3,200-square-mile area in South Central Texas, sees this partnership as an important move toward modernizing grid operations and enhancing energy reliability. The collaboration showcases the growing role of distributed residential battery storage in utility planning and grid modernization across the state.
